The grid is laid out in an alternative technique, but with obvious arrangement dynamics. There is a recognizable definition amongst each of the sections on the page and that contrasts between the messy, chaotic image shown on the contents page and the style of music featured in the magazine. This style of grid reflects the genre of music and the music scene that goes hand in hand with it. This would have been done deliberately to illustrate the organization that has gone into the contents page. The main design of the page has an effect of pieces of paper or posters that have been crumpled and then stuck onto a wall; there is a slight shadow behind these sections that shows this. The text column is laid out at the right hand side of the page in a particularly structured order, it is colour coded and the main articles are highlighted with thumbnails to match them. This has an interesting effect on the contents page as the text column design looks as though it has inserted using a computer, unlike the rest of the page that looks like posters stuck to a wall. The supporting images within the text columns are rotated but all rotated at the same direction and angle; this gives order to the chaotic feel of the magazine and the music featured within it. The images have an effect that looks as though they have been cut out and then been stuck onto a wall.
There is a main contents page image of two guys singing into microphones, they are both extremely sweaty and red in the face. In the background there are other people visible and this implies that the photograph was taken at a gig and it wasn’t posed for but an authentic picture from an actual gig. It adds realism to the magazine and this will appeal to the magazines target audience. There are supporting images for the articles that are highlighted in the feature boxes. This is so that the reader gets an idea of what the article is about and what it contains. They will find it easier to decide whether they want to read that certain feature and it will make it easy for them to navigate their way through the magazine. The style of photography is mainly a standard image taken of bands and musical artists in action. There is a supporting image that is in black and white, this could be to point out the fact that the band the image is of has a retro style of music, and the band is the ‘Ramones’ who are in fact a retro band that has an older target audience. None of the photographs look as though they have been edited because part of the indie music scene is to look untidy and scruffy, not to look neat and smart. So the images not being edited reflect this attitude.
The magazine’s logo is featured on the page to promote further what magazine the customer is reading, this will most likely be used on other pages so that the reader is constantly reminded of the magazines name. This will ensure that the magazine features are associated with this magazine. There are also images of other magazine issues at the bottom of the contents page, this will once again remind the reader of the magazine that they are reading and it will subconsciously encourage them to associate this magazine with its name.
The main page headline is a quote from the main article that is featured in the magazine. ‘If we yell loud enough we can wake the queen. One, two, three… AAAARRGGHHH!’ is the quote that is included. This gives the impression that the article is themed towards a something fierce and aggressive. The definition of the contents page relates to the font used within it; it is all the same, just a simple black font to provide information easily to the readers. The colour of the font is mostly black, thought sometimes white. The main article headline act’s name is in yellow, this could be to make it stand out on the page. The colour yellow is usually associated with danger, energy, warnings, etc. The contents are deliberately split into apparent sections, coloured squares is how they are presented to the reader. The colours are bright (yellow, red, blue etc) and attract the attention of the target audience. The reason for this style of content section is possibly to ensure that the contents page is useful to the reader and that it isn’t too confusing. The coloured sections have titles (news, features, reviews, etc) and then a list of articles with page numbers in each section; this is providing an efficient way for the reader to navigate their way through the magazine. There are only three different types of font used on the contents page; the first is a bold square font used for titles. It gives the feel of importance and draws attention to what the text says. The second font used is a simple and ordinary font used to describe what each article in the magazine contains. The final font used is unique; it is a signature from the journalist who wrote the main article. This gives the magazine a personalised touch that makes the reader understand that people are actually involved in making the magazine and it doesn’t just happen on its own.
There is no obvious colour palette used, the contents page is using a chaotic mixture of bright colours to display the insides of the magazine. This gives the magazine a young and edgy look that relates to its target audience. Although it would usually seem that using many colours is overwhelming, it works on this contents page. It relates back to the style of music featured in the magazine and the image associated with the indie/alternative scene.
Design your own Brief
The element of school that I am going to focus on in my magazine is the gossip and social aspects of life at Wycliffe College. My target audience for my magazine will be aimed at sixth form students between the ages of 16-18, directed at females. The hobbies that they might have importance to them could include horse riding, gymnastics etc. There interests that they have could consist of shopping, music, fashion etc. Their technology use will presumably include facebook, online shopping etc. The fashion that will appeal to them will include Jack Wills, Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, Zara, Topshop.
- The latest fashion releases from shops they are interested in and this seasons trends.
- The top 5 places to visit if you’re staying the weekend; Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bristol etc. and what the reasons are that they are in the top 5.
- New songs that have been released that everyone is listening to at the moment.
The freebie is a voucher that is redeemable in the café, takeaways in stonehouse or the co-op.
The promotion is that in the magazine there is a 10% discount code that can be used online at Abercrombie and Fitch.
The Competition; design one aspect of school apparel and the best design will be produced and sold in the school shop.

An interview with the head, which includes the reason for the schools dress code.
I want the magazine to provide the readers with a moment of relaxation and a chance to unwind after a hard day of school. A source of stress relief and serenity that allows students to take their minds off of A levels and work. The tone will include both aspects of in school life and life out of school; this then will have a casual and light feel to the magazine and its contents.
The register will be aimed at my target audience of 16-18 year olds, meaning that it will use informal language but with a more sophisticated style.
The location of my cover shoot will be a plain background with not much going on in the background, i.e. against a wall. There will be no props used in the photo-shoot as I am going for a minimal yet strong style. The shot type that will feature on my magazine cover will be a mid-shot.
